Once again, the NWSL is back. And once again, it returned with a fantastic 2-1 match full of drama and excitement. In the end, Mal Pugh assisted on a 92nd-minute winner to help win her Sky Blue FC debut against the Washington Spirit on Saturday at Segra Field.
Sam Mewis made her debut in the FA Women’s Super League, helping the Citizens to a 2-0 win over newly promoted Aston Villa on Saturday at Villa Park. The USWNT midfielder nearly scored 15 seconds into her debut and played the full 90 minutes in the first FA WSL match of the season.
It has not been, as those in the biz say, a slow news day.
So the 2019-20 season was a mess, we all know that. On top of everything else that had been cancelled or postponed, we added the Tokyo Olympics to that list. Once upon a time, they were set to take off July 24, 2020.
Why is this so important, you ask? Well, that was supposed to be the date the USWNT returned to play. With the Games now being postponed until July 2021, we have a while before these badass ladies return to the pitch.
I’ll admit, I quite enjoyed watched the end of this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League thanks to CBS All Access making them easy to view (if not a bit expensive given the monthly fee). I’m sure I wasn’t the only one, as NWSL fans may have kept their All Access subs for the Champions League. And now I’m sure many Americans are wondering how to watch WSL in the U.S. for the 2020-21 season.
Lyon won its fifth straight Women’s Champions League title (seventh overall) on Sunday. How on earth do you break OL’s hegemony when they’ve so thoroughly dominated Europe?
Buy all the other best players in the world not on Lyon. At least, that appears to be Chelsea’s plan.

Big news from Down Under. The Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced that a new home facility for the Australia women’s national team in Victoria has taken a huge step forward in its progress.
Kadeisha Buchanan won her fourth consecutive UEFA Women’s Champions League title — Lyon’s seventh overall — after Lyon defeated Wolfsburg 3-1 in the European final on Sunday.
Buchanan is from Toronto, Ontario and is a defender for the Canada women’s national team. She’s made 101 appearances for Canada, tallying 96 starts, four goals and three assists.
With Lyon, she appeared in all seven Champions League matches this season, including five starts, and scored her first-ever UWCL goal against Fortuna Hjørring.
