Over the weekend, Rennes vs Guingamp proved why PSG have basically run away with the Ligue 1 title this year. In case you hadn't noticed, Paris St. Germain have done pretty well in Ligue 1. They are 28 points ahead of second-placed Monaco, which incidentally, is the same amount of points that seperate Manchester United (5th) and Newcastle United (19th) in the Premier League. PSG wrapped up their fourth straight Ligue 1 title with eight games to spare, firmly cementing their dominance in France.
Now, some of that is probably because they have really good players. The likes of Ibrahimovic, Di Maria, Verrati, Cavani and Thiago Silva could fit into any team and are all deserving of the term "world-class."
However, we should also address the dramatic lack of competition that PSG face in Ligue 1. Lyon has looked a shell of its former self, Marseille are in complete and utter meltdown and Monaco's brief challenge was just that: brief.
This past weekend, Rennes vs Guingamp highlighted the gap in quality in Ligue 1 better than we ever could, even if we wrote on the subject for ten years. It's a goal that is pure slapstick gold. Not even Sunday League can touch this. It's so good, you can almost hear the Benny Hill soundtrack in the background. In fact, not even the commentators can hold themselves together. Have a look, and perhaps then, it will be clear exactly how PSG managed to open a 28-point gap at the top.
