Don't Sleep On A Hugely Improved Julian Green

Julian Green is yet to play a minute in the Bundesliga this season. His only appearance for the Bavarian giants was as a substitute in the DFB Pokal. For the USMNT, Green’s last start prior to this October call-up was back in 2014 — the same year he’d scored his lone, albeit unforgettable, USA goal.

However, there had recently been some promising signs for the 21-year-old. In Bayern Munich’s last match against FC Cologne, he was named on the substitute's bench. He earned a call-up for these largely experimental friendlies with Cuba and New Zealand, and Jurgen Klinsmann had been full of praise for his newfound level of maturity.

On Friday, Green was awarded a start against Cuba in Havana and allowed to play the full 90 minutes. For many, he was the United States’ man of the match and best attacking outlet.

Green was heavily involved in Chris Wondolowski’s opening goal, forcing the keeper to parry his shot into Wondolowski’s path. Green’s dynamic play was rewarded with his second-ever goal in a USA uniform.

Green was given another start against New Zealand on Tuesday night in Washington DC. Green opened the scoring with this effort in the 27th minute.

It was a timely reminder for all USMNT supporters that Green is still an incredibly important part of the team’s ambitions for the 2018 World Cup. At only 21 years of age and close to earning minutes with Bayern, Green seems to be ready to deliver for both club and country.
