Redhead Josh Sargent Makes Alexi Lalas Squeal With Sweet Strike

The last time a Werder Bremen scored in the Bundesliga was nearly three months ago in a 6-1 defeat to Bayern Munich. Leave it to an American to break the epic goal drought.

Josh Sargent scored two minutes into Werder’s match with Hertha Berlin on Saturday, a lovely left-footed blast from the edge of the area.

At halftime of the Wolfsburg-RB Leipzig match on FS1, commentator Alexi Lalas couldn’t stop gushing about a fellow redheaded American.

“Young? Yes,” Lalas screamed at the still-sleepy Americans watching at home. “Redhead? Yes. American? You bet. Josh Sargent, left foot in the back of the net!”

The goal was part of a rampaging start for the visitors in the nation’s capital. Davy Klaassen scored three minutes later to make it 2-0.

The goals were a sharp contrast to the form Werder Bremen has showed of late. The club’s only two goals in the Bundesliga in 2020 were own goals. Werder has won one league match since Sept. 14.

Unfortunately for Sarge, Hertha rallied with goals in the 41st and 60th minutes to secure a 2-2 draw and keep Werder Bremen from a vital win in its quest to avoid relegation. Bremen is currently in 17th out of 18 clubs, seven points from safety and three points from the relegation playoff (16th).

It was a similar story for Schalke, which was playing at home to Hoffenheim.

The team with the American scored first but was held to a draw. This time, Weston McKennie scored on a wonderful solo effort in the 20th minute.

But the lead didn’t last, as Christoph Baumgartner equalized in the 69th minute, leaving Schalke further adrift of a top-four Champions League spot (currently 10 back of fourth).
