With Bolivia sitting ninth in the 10-team South American World Cup qualifying table, and having lost all three of their Copa America Centenario matches, newly appointed manager Angel Guillermo Hoyos is determined to get the most out of La Verde by going back to square one — the square where he determines who in Bolivia actually plays soccer.
So, he’s named a 93-man squad for Bolivia’s upcoming matches against Peru and Chile. A large portion of Bolivia’s soccer playing community will be hopeful of representing their national side, including seven different goalkeepers, 27 defenders, 34 midfielders and 25 attackers. Seriously.
The training sessions will probably look something like this:
Hoyos was the former coach of the Barcelona B-squad — he was employed there at the same time when Lionel Messi came through the ranks. He’s attributed with having ‘discovered’ Messi in some sense, but his path towards discovering Bolivia’s next great talent would appear to be much more daunting.
The 53-year-old is either too arrogant in his observational skills or just arrogant enough.
Either way, Bolivia under Hoyos is going to be one hell of an experiment.
