The Mexican national team takes on the United States national team next week in what will be anything but a friendly match. The two teams are bitter rivals who constantly battle for regional dominance, with Mexico usually at the winning end between the two. The two sides will meet in San Antonio in preparation for this summer’s busy international schedule. Mexico will be looking to continue their 2015 undefeated streak, having won against Ecuador and Paraguay in the most recent international break. Those two matches saw Miguel Herrera experiment with his squad, clearly looking to see who will represent Mexico at the Gold Cup and who will represent Mexico at the Copa America.
Both the U.S.A. and Mexico are eager to get a feel for their opponents, with the Gold Cup looming over both squads this summer.
Compared to Mexico, the USMNT has had a troubled start to 2015. Their first match of the year was against Chile, where they lost 2-3 back in January. They managed to get a win against Paraguay in February, winning the match 2-0. In the most recent international break, they suffered a demoralizing 2-3 loss to Denmark, and tied 1-1 against Switzerland.
Even though it’s a friendly match, there is always a lot at stake when the US and Mexico go head to head. Mexico will be looking to continue their momentum and players will be hungry to show Miguel Herrera that they are deserving of a spot in either the Gold Cup or Copa America. The United States will be eager to put supporters at ease with a win against Mexico and right the ship that will lead them to a Gold Cup victory this summer.
