New York City FC wins "Tifo of the Year" for "Don't Be Plastic!" directed at Inter Miami and Lionel Messi fans

Inter Miami and Messi fans won't like this one.

New York City FC's supporters group, Third Rail, received the prestigious "Best Tifo of the Year" award from the Independent Supporters Council (ISC) for their "Don't Be Plastic!" Barbie-themed tifo, unveiled during the club's 2024 MLS Season home match against Inter Miami.

The tifo, which cleverly poked fun at the surge of casual fans attending matches to see Lionel Messi play, was directed at those who had never shown up for NYCFC games before but were present in force, sporting Inter Miami trademark pink colors with Messi's iconic kit number. NYCFC were to also spoil an Inter Miami win with a late, dramatic equalizer in the 95th minute to make it 1-1.

The 'Inter Miami diss,' as expected, quickly became a viral sensation, with Third Rail confirming it was to call out the "plastic" fans who only showed up for Messi's presence, rather than supporting their local team.

"This tifo is directed at all the New Yorkers (and others around MLS) who had never bothered to come out to see their local team play but were in attendance that day wearing pink for Messi," Third Rail posted on Instagram. 

The ISC is an international organization that includes over 150 supporter groups from across various soccer leagues, dedicated to recognize inclusivity, passion, and respect in the world of North American soccer.

Inter Miami will host NYCFC in the 2025 MLS Season on Feb. 22 at 2:30 pm EST.
