Rapinoe and Ertz feature on their final USWNT roster along with two exciting newcomers

The September USWNT roster for two friendlies vs. South Africa was revealed on Tuesday with 27 players set to be in the national team camp. Each friendly will also serve as a farewell match for Julie Ertz and Megan Rapinoe.

Ertz will play her final game on Thursday, Sept. 21 at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rapinoe’s last appearance for the national team will be Sunday, Sept. 24 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Here are the 27 players that USWNT interim head coach Twila Kilgore named to the roster.

September USWNT roster

Nearly all of the 2023 World Cup roster will return for national team duty with the exceptions of Sophia Smith and Kristie Mewis who are recovering from injuries.

It’s also worth noting that Ertz and Rapinoe will only feature in their farewell games meaning Rapinoe won’t play in Cincinnati and Ertz won’t play in Chicago.

Two newcomers

Interim head coach Kilgore did name six players who didn’t make the trip to New Zealand and Australia for the World Cup including two who have yet to make an appearance for the national team.

Youngsters Mia Fishel, 22, and Jaedyn Shaw, 18, are two forwards on the rise and could have the opportunity to represent the USWNT for the first time.

Fishel has garnered plenty of attention with her incredible performances while she was with Tigres in Liga MX Femenil from 2022 through 2023. Fishel scored 47 goals in 64 appearances for the Mexican club which caught the eye of Women’s Super League giant Chelsea.

The Blues signed Fishel in August for a $250,000 transfer fee.

Shaw, another exciting forward, has been putting in impressive performances with the San Diego Wave this season with five goals and two assists through 15 games. The 18-year-old also earned the award of U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year in 2022.

Overall, fans should be quite pleased with this September USWNT roster as it serves two purposes. This will act as a proper goodbye to two legends of the USWNT while also including players that could be the future of the team as preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics begin.
