In an attempt to regain pride for Brazil after their early World Cup exit, Neymar may have just embarrassed the nation yet again after being sent off in their Copa America match against Colombia.
After the final whistle blew with Colombia in the lead, Brazil’s poster boy came head-to-head with Murillo who seemed to egg him on. One thing lead to another resulting in Neymar attempting to headbutt the Colombian defender. Naturally, Carlos Bacca rushed over to protect his teammate by violently shoving Neymar away. Both players were sent off for unsporting behavior.
So what does this mean for Brazil and Colombia? Well, judging by the fact that the Brazilian team is built around Neymar, his absence until the semi-finals will be a big blow. It is almost déjà vu back to 2014 when they lost Neymar early in the competition to a back injury. There simply isn’t a natural replacement for Neymar with the current Brazilian squad selected that will allow them to keep their current form. Luckily they take on Venezuela in their next match, but even that could be difficult without the Barcelona forward as they managed to pull off a 1-0 upset over Colombia.
As for Colombia, the impact of their red card is not as vital. The Sevilla striker who helped raise the Europa League trophy will miss the same amount of matches as Neymar. However, with Jackson Martinez and Teofilo Gutierrez able to play in the left wing position, Colombia can continue on in full strength.
Brazil’s fate is up in the air now, and nearly impossible to predict. Brazilian boss Dunga has a lot to take in now, as the risk of an early dismal again looms over their heads. Brazil go on to face Venezuela where they will be tested on how well they can do without Neymar.
