Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has shown confidence that his club will retain the services of Pep Guardiola after the Spanish manager led Bayern to a resounding 6-1 victory over FC Porto in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
Guardiola came to Bayern after taking time off in order to get away from the stress of coaching at the top level of football. His stint with Barcelona before this break was one of the most successful in the history of club soccer.
Since returning to soccer and taking the position of manager at Bayern Munich, Guardiola has been successful, but has not yet hit the heights he hit at Barcelona. Rummenigge does not worry that Guardiola will leave any time soon — not for another break or to another club — good news for Bayern fans hoping that Guardiola can lead Bayern to the top of the footballing world.
"I don't worry about [other clubs being interested in Guardiola],” said Rummenigge to the press. “It just shows the quality of our coach.”
Rummenigge went on to address specifically the rumors that Guardiola might replace Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City, as the blue side of Manchester has struggled mightily this year, leading to doubts concerning Pellegrini’s position at the club.
"I can't imagine that Pep Guardiola will join a club like Manchester City. I know for sure that he will be our coach until June 30, 2016 at least."
Rummenigge hopes to keep Guardiola for as long as possible, or at least past when Guardiola’s current contract is up in 2016.
"We have an agreement. We'll finish this season, and we will talk in the second half of 2015," he said. "Our goal is to prolong with Pep Guardiola. And I think that we have good chances he'll be our coach beyond 2016."
