The National Women’s Soccer league isn’t done with the 2020 season just yet. Even after declaring a champion at the NWSL Challenge Cup in July, the league announced on Tuesday it would continue playing matches this season. Maybe having a team that had never made the playoffs declared champion didn’t sit well with the league.

On Thursday, July 23, Liga MX returned with the beginning of the 2020 Apertura season (renamed Guardianes to honor healthcare workers). When Atlético San Luis and Juárez took to the pitch, it marked 130 days since the 2020 Clausura season was brought to an abrupt halt and eventually canceled. MLS and the NBA have used live video feeds of fans displayed in the background of the action. Many MLB teams have created cardboard cutouts of fans behind home plate. Some broadcasters have used computer-animated fans to fill the stadiums.
But nothing beats the Philadelphia Union’s plan.

Eight nations will compete in the final Octagonal with five (USMNT, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras and Jamaica) automatically qualified. The three nations joining these five will come from this pot of nations.
