According to The Athletic, Sacramento, California, is gearing up to launch an NWSL expansion team.

Last fall, the city hinted at launching a team — and came so close to closing on the deal. But with the arrival of the horrid 2020 year, the league decided to hold off on any and all potential expansion teams and keep the league at nine teams.

The preliminary draw for Concacaf 2022 World Cup Qualifying first round was revealed along with the schedules for teams in the Final Round on Wednesday. The usual Hex format has been scrapped with the new Octagonal. 

Eight nations will compete in the final Octagonal with five (USMNT, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras and Jamaica) automatically qualified. The three nations joining these five will come from this pot of nations.

Three years ago, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, leaving the territory’s infrastructure in shambles. Soccer was an afterthought, with hundreds of thousands left without homes and millions left without power. 

This week, Puerto Rico revealed its road to recovery for soccer in the U.S. territory, with an ambitious plan to build green, eco-friendly stadiums that double as shelters during natural disasters — and a goal to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

The summer transfer window is open and will stay open for the next few months. Huge signings and huge sums of money have been spent on the men's side, and I’m sure most of us know the ins and outs of the men's transfer market.

On Friday, Aug. 21, the UEFA Women’s Champions League returns with the quarterfinals of the competition following a layoff that hasn’t seen a match played since last Halloween. 

However, the tournament now returns in grand style with a knockout-style format in the Basque Country of northern Spain. Athletic Bilbao’s San Mamés and Real Sociedad’s Anoeta host the remainder of the competition, and Friday’s match in San Sebastián sees Wolfsburg — two-time winner of the competition — take on the only remaining part-time team left, Scotland’s Glasgow City.

Manchester City has signed United States' World Cup-winning midfielder Rose Lavelle from National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) side OL Reign, the English club said on Tuesday.

The midfielder joined OL Reign from Washington Spirit this week but had signed an agreement to join a club outside the NWSL.
