The18's Complete 2021 Soccer Calendar

No one can argue that 2020 has been an awful year that we all want to put behind us. But before we look ahead 2021, we have to take a minute to appreciate how sports have provided something resembling normality in recent months.

Considering the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been incredibly lucky to have soccer leagues playing regularly since June.

USL Championship Cancels Final Over Covid-19 Outbreak

The USL Championship title game set for Sunday was called off because of a COVID-19 outbreak among one the teams.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies had multiple positive COVID-19 tests confirmed early Saturday and will not play the Phoenix Rising FC for the league title. Both teams will be named their respective conference champions instead.

Phoenix Rising Player That Used Homophobic Slur Against SD Loyal Handed Six-Match Ban

Landon Donovan and his club’s vow to fight discrimination in soccer captured a small victory as the USL announced a ban against the Phoenix Rising player that used a homophobic slur during a game in September. The hateful language was directed at San Diego Loyal’s Collin Martin, who is openly gay. Donovan and the club chose to forfeit the match in response.

Phoenix Rising Places Player Accused Of Slur, Coach Who Did Nothing On Leave

A day after an alleged homophobic slur by one player against another led to San Diego Loyal SC walking off the pitch in protest and forfeiting their USL Championship match against Phoenix Rising FC, the Rising on Thursday announced they placed midfielder Junior Flemmings — the player at the heart of the allegation — on administrative leave.

Rising coach Rick Schantz also took leave, but unrelated matter to a USL investigation, the team announced.

Discrimination Is So Bad In America, Landon Donovan’s USL Club Forfeit Its Final Two Matches

“We will speak. We will act.”

That was the promise made by San Diego Loyal SC players after teammate Elijah Martin was racially abused in a match against LA Galaxy II last week. The USL club had a plan to join together with Wednesday night’s opponent, Phoenix Rising, to halt the match in the 71st minute to raise banners with the phrase in a show of solidarity against white supremacy.

Landon Donovan’s Club Forfeits Point Earned In Match Because Opponent Used Racial Slur

LA Galaxy II parted ways with defender Omar Ontiveros on Saturday, three days after he was found to have used a racial slur during a USL Championship game against the San Diego Loyal, which is coached by former USMNT star Landon Donovan.

The league on Friday suspended the 25-year-old Ontiveros for six games, tacked on to his one-game ban for the red card he received in the 1-1 draw on Wednesday night.

MLS, NWSL Investigating Alleged Racist Asshole Dell Loy Hansen (This Shouldn’t Take Long)

Dell Loy Hansen is, by many accounts, a homophobic, racist, old man. No matter how much money he has to put into NWSL, MLS and USL, there’s no room for this type of human to be involved in sports.

What Does The Women’s Transfer Market Look Like?

The summer transfer window is open and will stay open for the next few months. Huge signings and huge sums of money have been spent on the men's side, and I’m sure most of us know the ins and outs of the men's transfer market.

The Most Creative Team Names In American Soccer

Let's face it, most American soccer team names are rather boring, especially in Major League Soccer. The prospect of watching Montreal Impact play New York City FC doesn't exactly have me racing to the TV to turn on whatever channel carries MLS these days. And don't even get me started about the logos (bring back 90's MLS logos, please).

Despite an overwhelming number of ill-conceived corporate logos, the lower levels of American soccer do provide some great teams names
