Mexico stun USWNT with dominant 2-0 victory to top Concacaf Gold Cup group

A 38th-minute goal by Jacqueline Ovalle and a score by Mayra Pelayo in second-half stoppage time led Mexico to a stunning 2-0 victory over the U.S. women's national team in Carson, Calif., on Monday to win Group A of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup.

The victory snapped Mexico's 16-match losing streak to the U.S. since a 2-1 win in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women's World Cup qualifying event in Cancun, Mexico, on Nov. 5, 2010. The U.S. leads the series 40-1-2 and had blanked the Mexicans in the previous six meetings.

Jaedyn Shaw's first-half brace helped the U.S. women's national team cruise to a 4-0 victory over Argentina in a Group A match of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup on Friday in Carson, Calif.

Coupled with a 5-0 win over the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, the U.S. secured a spot in the quarterfinals with one group match left against Mexico in Carson on Monday.

The quarterfinals will be played March 2-3 in Los Angeles before the tournament moves to San Diego for the semifinals on March 6 and the final on March 10.

Soccer fans in Los Angeles did not show out for the United States women’s national team’s 5-0 victory vs. Dominican Republic in the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup on Tuesday.

The USWNT will play all three of their group stage games at Dignity Health Sports Park, the home of the LA Galaxy. The players will be hoping the attendance improves as the tournament progresses.

On Tuesday just 3,242 fans filled the 27,000-seat stadium.

Mia Fishel tears ACL in training one day before Gold Cup, Alex Morgan replaces her on roster

The United States women’s national team was hit with a major injury blow on Monday when striker Mia Fishel tore her ACL in her right knee during training. Alex Morgan will fill Fishel’s spot on the USWNT’s roster.

Fishel’s injury came one day before the USWNT play their opening match in the inaugural Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup.

Alex Morgan left off USWNT Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup roster

Alex Morgan’s name was left off the United States women’s national team roster for a second time in a row on Wednesday as the star forward won’t compete at the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup.

Morgan also wasn’t included in the December roster that saw a litany of younger players play two friendlies against China. This time the roster has almost all the big names with Becky Sauerbrunn and Morgan being the major omissions.

Taking over Morgan’s role at the No. 9 will be either Sophia Smith or rising Chelsea star Mia Fishel.

Alex Morgan still has a couple years left representing the USWNT and playing in the NWSL, but we might have already seen what her next career path could be. An Alex Morgan golfing clip from the Farmers Insurance Open Pro-Am this week has shown she’s quite the golfer.

Morgan posted clips of her golf swing to Instagram and Twitter and jokingly asked pro golfer Max Homa for his opinion. Even he had little to criticize about Morgan’s swing.

Alex Morgan left off latest USWNT roster as younger players called up

The latest USWNT roster for two December friendlies vs. China had several big players not receive call ups including the likes of Alex Morgan, Crystal Dunn, Alyssa Naeher and Becky Sauerbrunn.

Instead, interim head coach Twila Kilgore has chosen a litany of fresh faces with a mix of familiar names. The move from U.S. Soccer was done to give newer players a chance to enter the player pool.

Netflix announced the name and release date for the docuseries following the United States women’s national team's journey at the 2023 World Cup. “Under Pressure” will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the USWNT in New Zealand/Australia and comes out on Dec. 12.

Alex Morgan and San Diego could end Megan Rapinoe’s career on Sunday in NWSL semifinal

Two of the biggest players in United States women’s national team history will face off in search of NWSL glory. Alex Morgan’s San Diego Wave FC will host Megan Rapinoe’s OL Reign in the NWSL semifinals at 9:30 p.m. ET on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium.

It could be Rapinoe’s final professional game.

Rapinoe has already retired from the USWNT and will hang up her boots at the end of the 2023 NWSL season. The 38-year-old forward has spent the last 10 years with OL Reign but has never won a championship.
