United States men’s national team forward Gio Reyna is having a rough start to the 2023-24 club season with Borussia Dortmund. Reyna remained on the bench Wednesday as an unused substitute as Dortmund drew AC Milan 0-0 in the Champions League.
His USMNT teammates Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah both started for Milan, but Reyna would never see the field.

The 20-year-old has yet to record a single minute so far this season. Reyna was out injured with a foot injury for August and the first half of September, but has sat the bench for two Bundesliga games and a pair of Champions League matches.
It’s clear that Dortmund manager Edin Terzic doesn’t rate Reyna too highly at the moment. Wednesday’s game vs. Milan was clearly lacking a spark and Terzic replaced all four of his forward players.
Reyna couldn’t have felt too good seeing four attacking players put into the game as he remained seated.
Terzic’s substitutes vs. AC Milan:
- Karim Adeyemi replaced Julian Brant at right wing in the 64th minute
- 19-year-old Jamie Bynoe-Gittens replaced Donyell Malen at left wing in the 72nd minute
- Felix Nmecha replaced Marco Reus at CAM in the 72nd minute
- 18-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko replaced Niclas Füllkrug at striker in the 85th minute
In total that’s EIGHT attacking minded players that Terzic used over Reyna.
Reyna has never been a usual starter for Terzic with the American only cracking the starting XI in seven of his 30 appearances last season. Reyna frequently made contributions when coming off the bench with five goals and two assists as a substitute.
Terzic has still found success without Reyna's work as Dortmund are unbeaten in their first six Bundesliga games this season.
Dortmund only have one game left before the October international break where the USMNT will face Germany and Ghana. Gregg Berhalter and Reyna have had discussions since their World Cup drama, but it’s unlikely that Gio will get a call up with no appearances this season.
It could be a tough year for Reyna going forward. His contract with Dortmund runs until 2025 and it’s too early to tell if he will look for a move in the upcoming winter transfer window.
