OUCH — USWNT drop to lowest-ever FIFA ranking despite W Gold Cup win

The USWNT have dropped to their lowest-ever position in the official FIFA rankings following their participation and win in the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup. 

The four-time World Cup champions now sit in fourth (2011.20 points), below France (2018.81), England (2021.41) and first-placed Spain (2085.96).

This is the lowest ranking for the national team since FIFA started began ranking women’s teams in 2003 — over 20 years of remaining on the podium of best ranked countries. 

The U.S. women’s national team sat in second place prior to the start of the intercontinental first-edition of the W Gold Cup and despite winning the tournament against current Copa America Femenil champions Brazil (10th) in the final, an important loss in the group stage of the cup sentenced the Americans to a blow in the rankings.

According to FIFA, the USWNT’s loss against Mexico (31st) in the group stage of the W Gold Cup hit the Americans with a 39.31 point deduction in the table — a blow that ultimately sent them to their current position. For context, their win against Brazil only gained the U.S. 6.51 points in the table.

Without the loss against El Tri, the USWNT would remain in second place and 40.84 points away from the current World Cup and Nations League champions Spain. 

The U.S. women’s national team will continue to try and rise in the rankings when they compete for the SheBelieves Cup next April. They will face off against Japan (7th) in the tournament’s semi final.
