Spurs Crumble And Finish Behind Arsenal For The 21st Consecutive Season

I hope Tottenham fans are also Chance the Rapper fans because they are going to need some serious feel good music in order to get over what has just happened to their team. After being 5 points clear of Arsenal with 3 games left to play, they have finished below Arsenal in the Premier League for the 21st consecutive season.

Their last loss was the most shocking. Newcastle were relegated, but that didn’t stop them from figuring out how to play soccer on the last day of the season. It would be charming if it weren’t so hilarious; Newcastle dismantled Tottenham 5-1.

As a result of that and Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa, Spurs are once again the laughing stock of the world. This was the season they were supposed to challenge for the title — they did challenge for the title, battling Leicester City almost till the very end. It was them or Leicester, and yet here we are, discussing a team that somehow managed to finish 3rd in a two horse race.

The banter writes itself; I could literally just troll through the internet and hand pick sentences and write this article; that’s what I did for the last two sentences.

For those of you who frequent /r/soccer on Reddit: the Spurs subreddit has been set to private after today’s events. They don’t want to deal with the trolls, the jokes, and the incredulous hyperbole that would have flooded in. It’s the internet equivalent of locking yourself in your room and putting on headphones.

The rest of the world will have to settle for understanding Spurs shame through the mere fact that the best Spurs side in years, one laden with youth and talent, has crumbled in historic fashion. They were the hope of White Hart Lane, fielding arguably the future of England, dazzling with goals and assists, and they somehow managed to replicate the art that Arsenal, their main rivals, have almost patented: making what can be seen as relative success glare as a shocking shame. Never has finishing 3rd tasted so sour.

Summer friends don’t stay, and apparently neither does success on the white side of North London.
