Chelsea’s march toward Champions League football next season took a stumble with a 3-0 defeat to Sheffield United, which improved its own chances of playing in Europe in the fall. In doing so, the Blades equaled one of the most remarkable records in Premier League history.
Sheffield United took a 2-0 lead by halftime thanks to goals from David McGoldrick and Oliver McBurnie. The duo’s goals marked just the second time in Premier League history that two players with the surname prefix “Mc” scored in the same game for the same team. The only previous time teammates with the “Mc” prefix scored in the same game was when Callum McManaman and James McArthur scored for Wigan during the club’s relegation season in May 2013.

McGoldrick and McBurnie started up top in a 3-5-2 and took advantage of a Blues side that couldn’t find any rhythm against the Blades’ press.
Sheffield Chelsea Highlights
McGoldrick opened the scoring in the 18th minute after Mason Mount foolishly tried to dribble out of his own box. McBurnie’s first effort was saved well by Kepa despite a deflection, but the Chelsea defenders just watched as McGoldrick swooped in to kick in the rebound.
McBurnie scored his goal in the 33rd minute, powering a header past a helpless Kepa.
Chelsea coach Frank Lampard essentially waved the white flag in the 66th minute by taking off Christian Pulisic for Olivier Giroud. If only Pulisic had changed his name to McPulisic or McLovin, maybe he would’ve gotten on the scoresheet and made a game of it.
McGoldrick added a second in the 77th minute to give him two goals in one match after having gone the entire season without a goal. It took 26 games, 42 shots and 1,615 minutes to score his first Premier League goal but a mere 59 minutes to net his second.
