That’s a hellish Sunday afternoon for supporters of Everton Football Club.
On the women’s side, the 2020 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium was lost after a dramatic 3-1 extra time defeat to Manchester City. City’s Sam Mewis opened the scoring with an unmarked header off a corner kick in the 40th minute.

The USWNT midfielder was also the hero of City’s semifinal victory over Arsenal, but that opener was cancelled out by Valérie Gauvin — herself the hero of Everton’s quarterfinal upset of Chelsea — on the hour mark.

But with just nine minutes to go until penalties, 19-year-old forward Jess Park — on as a substitute for Rose Lavelle in the 70th minute — threaded one through for Georgia Stanway to put City in control.

Stanway then turned provider at the death with Canada’s Janine Beckie putting the nail in Everton’s coffin. It’s the Citizens third FA Cup triumph overall having also won in 2017 and 2019. Everton last won the competition in 2010.

On the men’s side, Everton travelled to Newcastle knowing a victory at St. James’ Park would take them above rival Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.
Carlo Ancelotti was looking for a reaction following last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Southampton, but it was Newcastle that forced Robin Olsen — deputizing for the “rested” Jordan Pickford — into the strongest save of the first half.
The home side opened the scoring from the spot in the 56th minute after André Gomes fouled Callum Wilson while attempting to clear a corner. Wilson converted the penalty.

The three points were secured when Ryan Fraser — on as a substitute in the 74th minute — scooted away from Yerry Mina before his deflected cross was turned in at the far post by his former Bournemouth teammate.
Wilson now has six goals in seven Premier League appearances for Newcastle.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back in stoppage time but it wasn’t enough for Everton, who were without the suspended duo of Richarlison and Lucas Digne and the injured duo of James Rodríguez and Seamus Coleman.

Everton now sits second — level on points with Southampton and Wolves — and three points behind Liverpool. Newcastle is up to 10th and level on points with Manchester City and Tottenham.
