Every little girl that participates in soccer at a young age dreams of playing on her national team or professionally. Except Australian native Samantha Kerr.
Growing up in Perth, Australia, Kerr broke gender barriers by playing a sport that was predominately male. She refers to it as footy, but that is just the outback way of saying rugby. Playing a so-called male sport is difficult for any female, but Kerr went unnoticed as a girl by her boy teammates and once they discovered she was not the same as them they cried.
This goes to show that girls can play like boys and the evolution of sports and gender crossovers is increasing all over the world. From a young age Kerr proved to be the best amongst her boy peers, as well as her future soccer career. The physical changes males go through caused Kerr to find a new passion and it took her quite some time to discover her love for a new sport, the real footy, soccer.
Her background in the AFL definitely helped her in learning the techniques of soccer, but she remained stubborn and refused to appreciate this new portion of her life. The dreams young girls have of playing professionally and making a career out of the sport they love is something that Kerr did not share with many.
She made the Australian national team at 15 years old and didn’t even let her parents come watch her play. It took another three years of playing for her to understand how important soccer was to her and how big of a role it now played in her life. So she traded in tackling boys and throwing a football-shaped ball for an Australia jersey and a round ball that is supposed to be kept on the ground.

Kerr accomplished a crazy dream of many youngsters without realizing how big of a deal it actually was. As talented as she is, this lack of appreciation in her past has helped keep her humble and proud to represent her country.
She is definitely one of the best female soccer players in the world and I doubt she ever imagined herself being where she is now, being one of the top goal scorers, playing professionally in America for the Chicago Red Stars and being a four-time Golden Boot winner. The next accomplishment on her list is to win a World Cup and she will have that opportunity this summer in France.
Just a little girl from Perth, Australia, who just wanted to be one of the boys in the AFL continues to prove herself by backflipping her way to being the best football player in the world.
