The 2016 NWSL season concluded on October 6th with the Western New York Flash winning the title on penalties. Meanwhile, on the men's side of the game, the Carolina RailHawks were sitting at home after missing the NASL playoffs and wondering how to rebound in 2017. Now, neither of those teams exist — well, not in their previous form.
Steve Malik purchased the RailHawks in 2016 and rebranded them North Carolina FC in December. He announced plans to push for both MLS and NWSL teams in the future. Less than two months later, the Flash had been purchased and relocated by Malik. They've since been rebranded as the NC Courage and have already participated in their first NWSL draft.
Inheriting a squad that just won the title is probably the best way for a new franchise to begin. So when it came down to deciding the manager for the upcoming season, there was really only one choice. The first head coach of the NC Courage is the former Western New York Flash manager, Paul Riley.

The NC Courage President Curt Johnson commented, “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Paul. The success that he’s had throughout his career speaks for itself, in particular, winning the championship last year. He likes great attacking soccer, and that’s something that we are excited to bring to the Triangle.”
Riley has had a successful career in women’s soccer in America. He was the Women’s Professional Soccer Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2011. Between the WPS and WPSL, he led teams to championship games in four out of six seasons with the Philadelphia Independence and the Long Island Fury.
Speaking about the season ahead, coach Riley stated, “We hope to give the fan base an exciting, hungry team and a style of play they will enjoy and embrace. Team and staff are looking forward to meeting and developing a fan base to compete with the best in the sport.”
The Flash wore red, black and white jerseys; the old Carolina RailHawks were known for their trademark orange jerseys. The Courage will be heading in a new direction, along with the NCFC men’s squad in the NASL.
