Lyon Prevail In Goalie vs. Goalie Shootout To Win The Women's Champions League

It required extra time — and ultimately extra penalties – to break the stalemate between Lyon and PSG and determine the champion of women's soccer in Europe.

After two hours without a goal and a 6-6 deadlock in penalties, each keeper took her turn from the spot. PSG goalie Katarzyna Kiedrzynek pushed a shot wide left, opening the door for her counterpart to seal the victory. Lyon's Sarah Bouhaddi stepped up and drilled her penalty to give Lyon its fourth UCL title in the past seven seasons.

The game featured few good chances, with both sides playing conservatively, particularly in extra time. Lyon lost Alex Morgan in the 17th minute when she reaggravated a hamstring injury and was forced off. It's fitting that this one came down to the goalies, as it was clear that both sides knew each other well and were not giving an inch in the attacking third.

Lyon join FFC Frankfurt for most UCL titles all time at four. PSG is still seeking its first, and this one was agonizingly close.
