Louis van Gaal Praises Queens Park ... RAISINS?

It’s fair to say the Dutch have some interesting turns of phrase. For example, when it’s dark outside, they might say: “It’s dick black out there.” If there’s a particularly heavy downpour, you may hear the saying, “It rains steel pipes.” Or, if you’re especially lucky, you might be told “to participate for bacon and beans,” though we have absolutely no idea in what context that would be said.

So, The18 wasn’t wholly surprised when Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal – a man fluent in four languages – chose to describe Harry Redknapp’s Queens Park RANGERS as…

Queens Park Raisins. Of course, van Gaal isn’t the first manager to make a food-related naming error. Last season Jose Mourinho referred to Manchester City’s manager Manuel "Pellegrino," while in 2013 Joe Kinnear – having just been appointed Newcastle’s head of player recruitment – called the Magpies’ star midfielder Yohan Cabaye “Yohan Kebab”.

In other words, the big Dutchman is in exalted company. Brace yourselves for United to make a late January move for Jesus Tapas. Or Kieron Ribs. Or Leighton Beans. Or…okay, okay, we’ll stop.
