This is great to see as the interest in the new era of the USWNT is at an all-time high. After the worst World Cup in the team’s history last summer, the USWNT have bounced back with new head coach Emma Hayes and a youthful squad.
The success has come from all different areas of the field. The front three — nicknamed Triple Espresso — of Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman have scored three goals each and been involved in 10 of the team’s 11 goals.
Naomi Girma has earned praise as the best defender in the world with standout performances in the Games having played every minute. Behind her in goal is the veteran Alyssa Naeher who has come up big when needed.
The USWNT have outscored their opponents 11-2 in the tournament so far.
As for their opponents in the gold medal game, there’s a bit of an ironic twist.
Brazil have the USWNT to thank for even making it out of the group stage.
The women’s soccer tournament at the Olympics features three groups of four teams. The top two teams of each group advanced along with the two best third-placed team.
Brazil finished third in their group of Spain, Japan and Nigeria with three points. Their only chance of advancing to the knockout stage was if the USWNT defeated Australia in the group stage finale.
The U.S. took down the Aussies 2-1 which just barely got the Brazilians out of the group as the second-best third-place team.
In the knockout stages Brazil were without their legend Marta who was given a two-game suspension for a red card in the final group stage game.
The South American side dug deep to pull off a 1-0 quarterfinal upset against the hosts France and then shocked the world in the semifinal with a 4-2 demolition of Spain.
Brazil’s women have never won a major title before (World Cup or Olympics) and icon Marta will be desperate to give her country a famous win. The 38-year-old will retire from the national team after Saturday’s game in her sixth and final Olympics.
She and Brazil earned silver in 2004 and 2008 but will now seek that elusive gold against a high-flying USA.
These two teams met earlier this year in the Concacaf W Gold Cup final in March when the USWNT won 1-0.
