Francesco Totti is one of the most respected players int he world because he has stayed at the same club for his entire career, and what a career it has been. At 39 years old, he has played for AS Roma and only for AS Roma since 1992. That’s 24 years at the same club, for much longer than half of his life.
But like all players he will eventually have to retire, and it is looking more and more like this might be the year he’ll do it.
That is what makes the last goal he scored so special. It was a late equalizer against Atalanta, his first goal since September 20th, and only his second goal in all competitions this year.
You can hear what it means to the commentator, Carlo Zampa. The goal might be Totti’s last in a Roma uniform, and Zampa is overcome with emotion having seen it.

It’s easy to imagine Zampa wasn’t the only Roma fan reduced to tears by the goal. It must be hard to witness the end of an era, and Totti’s career has been nothing if not that.
