Check Out Aubameyang’s Priceless Reaction To Not Getting A Community Shield Medal

Sign da ting. That’s all Arsenal fans want right now, especially after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang guided the Gunners to a Community Shield win over Liverpool on Saturday at Wembley.

Aubameyang, the club captain and leading goal scorer, netted the opener and converted the final penalty as FA Cup champion Arsenal beat Premier League champion Liverpool 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 score line after 90 minutes. To top it all off, Auba didn’t even mind when he didn’t get a medal after the match, laughing it off with that infectious smile of his. Now Arsenal just hopes Aubameyang signs a contract extension to stay in North London.

Mikel Arteta guided the Gunners to their second trophy since becoming Arsenal coach in December, following an FA Cup final win over Chelsea earlier this month. Arteta has now won as many trophies in his first nine months (two) as Arsene Wenger won in his final three seasons with Arsenal. Arteta has beaten Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp (twice) in the last couple months, not to mention overcoming Covid-19.

Community Shield Highlights 2020

Arsenal struck first on Saturday, a bit against the run of play but not undeserved. Aubameyang cut in from the left wing to strike a beautiful goal from the edge of the 18. The Gabonese striker then pulled out the Wakanda Forever salute in a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther actor who died on Friday.

While Liverpool maintained most of the possession, Arsenal’s defense rarely gave up opportunities. When the Reds did create a chance on goal, Emiliano Martinez was there to deny them. Despite how good Bernd Leno has been for the club, it’s gonna be hard to take Martinez out of the lineup when the Premier League season rolls around.

Eventually, it was a sloppy equalizer that kept Liverpool alive, with Takumi Minamino in the right place to send the match to penalties.

If you live on Reddit, you might be led to believe there was a handball on Mohamed Salah in the buildup, but we couldn’t find any angle to suggest there was such an infraction.

With the score even after 90 minutes, the match went straight to a shootout, which was a bit of a shame because after the equalizer the game really sprung to life.

In the penalty shootout, Rhian Brewster was the only player to miss, hitting his attempt off the crossbar and over. None other than Aubameyang converted the final penalty to allow Arsenal to lift the Shield. Aubameyang then repeated his Wakanda Forever salute.

To promote social distancing, Arsenal players had to pick up their own medals from a pile. Somewhat comically, they ran out of medals before Aubameyang could grab his. Not that he minded, as the captain simply picked up the Community Shield trophy and the celebrations were on. Unlike the FA Cup trophy, Aubameyang didn’t drop this one.

With an international break this coming week, the Premier League season will begin Sept. 12, with Arsenal heading across town to face Fulham in the first match of the campaign.

And while you’re here, you might want to check out the highlights from the Women’s Community Shield from earlier in the day, which included a stupendous strike from Chelsea’s Millie Bright, helping her side to a 2-0 win over Manchester City.
