Bundesliga Match Descends Into Chaos After Manager Is Clotheslined By Player

One look at the Bundesliga table — with Borussia Mönchengladbach currently on top — tells you that it’s been a wild season so far in Germany. But that adjective doesn’t come close to describing the scenes that unfolded at the end of today’s match between SC Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt at the Schwarzwald-Stadion.

Freiburg is flying high ahead of this November’s international break. The club has never qualified for the Champions League, but they’re currently in fourth place and beginning to dream. A visit of ninth-place Eintracht was always going to prove heated, and that certainly proved the case.

Things began jumping off just before halftime, when Eintracht defensive midfielder Gelson Fernandes was handed his second yellow card and given his marching orders.

Eintracht held firm until the 77th minute, but Nils Petersen finally made the breakthrough for the home side. That set the stage for the game’s grand finale.

With Eintract chasing an equalizer, the ball went out of play near the technical area. Eintracht captain David Abraham went to retrieve it, but Freiburg manager Christian Streich was somewhat in his way. Taking great offense to the coach’s positioning, Abraham dropped a shoulder and sent the 54-year-old flying.

Abraham was given a straight red card, as was Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo for his role in the resulting skirmish.
