Portugal has thrown up its second ridiculous refereeing decision in the space of a week, this one taking place in a reserve match between Braga and Sporting.
Danilo was sent off in the Taca da Liga cup competition on Tuesday night after the ref ran into him, but this error was just as dumbfounding. Sporting B put the ball in the back of the net, and a glance at the linesman showed that he was perfectly okay with it — he even begins to trot back towards the center circle, a telltale sign that the goal stands.
However, with Sporting’s players celebrating, the referee instructs the linesman to go back and signal for offside.
While this transpires, Braga quickly get the ball up the field and capitalize against the undermanned Sporting defense.
It’s a heads up play from Braga, and a fine finish, but it’s refereeing of the lowest standard.
