Two Americans Among Nominees For BBC Women’s Footballer Of The Year 2020

Five stellar female footballers have been nominated for Footballer of the Year.

The nominations for the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year 2020 have been revealed and the nominees are standouts for both country and club. The five contenders were chosen by a group of experts including coaches, players administrators and journalists. Voting is done by the public and closes on Monday, March 2. 

The BBC Women's Footballer of the Year nominees are:

Lucy Bronze

A 28-year-old defender for England and Lyon as well as being a UNC Chapel Hill alum. Bronze has 81 caps and helped the Three Lionesses reach the World Cup semifinals, helped England win the SheBelievesCup in 2019 and has a UEFA Champions League title with Lyon. A Lioness standout and more of a gold winner than a bronze, if you ask me.

 

Julie Ertz

A 27-year-old standout midfielder for the USWNT and Chicago Red Stars. She has two World Cup medals, most recently from this 2019 Women’s World Cup in France. In 2017, Ertz was playing in a more defensive role and got moved up during a match against Chile. She know controls the tempo of the game and holds down the middle of the field. 

 

Sam Kerr

Kerr is a 26-year-old who plays for Australia and Chelsea. She is a stellar forward and definitely one of the best goal scorers in the world. A female footballer with a winning mentality and star quality is something that makes Kerr unique and has guided her way to success. Sam Kerr played for the Chicago Red Stars, appeared in the Australian W-League, was a standout for the Matildas and recently found herself making a difference for Chelsea. 

 

Vivianne Miedema

The youngest nominee at 23 years old, Miedema is a forward for the Netherlands and Arsenal. Miedema has 87 caps and in 2018-2019 she scored 22 goals for Arsenal and won a WSL championship. She also played with the Netherlands and reached the World Cup final, scoring three goals in the World Cup becoming her nation’s all-time leading scorer. 

 

Megan Rapinoe

A familiar name and face to award nominations. The 34-year-old is a forward for the USWNT and Reign FC. She is a friend and teammate of Julie Ertz. Rapinoe won the Golden Boot and Best FIFA Women’s Player and has two World Cup titles along with a lot more awards.

 

All these lady ballers are deserving of being named the best, but the winner of Women's Footballer of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, March 24, on BBC and BBC Sport Website.
