On Monday, France Football (over the course of five ridiculous hours) released its 30-man shortlist for the 2019 Ballon d’Or prize, as well as a 20-player shortlist for the Ballon d'Or Féminin. Last year, Luka Modrić broke Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s combined 10-year stranglehold on the game’s most prestigious individual award, but Messi is again the favorite this year after leading Barcelona to the Spanish league title while capturing his sixth European Golden Shoe.
A victory for Messi would see him break a current deadlock with Ronaldo with regards to the most wins by a single player — the Argentine and Portuguese legends have both won it five times.

Messi’s closest competitor will likely be Liverpool and Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk.
On the women’s side, Lyon’s Ada Hegerberg won the inaugural Ballon d'Or Féminin last year, and she’d again be a potential winner if not for her decision to sit out the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup due to an ongoing dispute with the Norwegian Football Federation over a lack of commitment to the women’s game.
The award will likely go to either Megan Rapinoe or Alex Morgan for the roles they played in the USWNT’s fourth World Cup title. Other U.S. stars on the shortlist include Rose Lavelle and Tobin Heath.
