Borussia Dortmund had a strong first half on Saturday against Augsburg, taking a 2-1 lead into the break on the back of two gorgeous goals and expecting to stretch out its lead in the second half in the same way that saw them score 19 goals in their first six matches. Instead, Augsburg hung tough and stayed in the match until the match ended 2-1 thanks to some questionable decision making from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang is the joint leading scorer in Bundesliga, tied with Robert Lewandowski with eight goals now through seven matches. It should’ve been nine for the Gabon international, except for this awful penalty kick in the 77th minute.
After VAR awarded Dortmund a penalty for a tug in the box, Aubameyang stepped up and took his shot with aplomb. Just kidding, he did this:
Dortmund barely held on to beat Augsburg to maintain its unbeaten run to start the Bundesliga campaign, but it could have gone the other way. Augsburg played well in the second half and nearly equalized a time or two. Fortunately, BVB has plenty of attacking flair in the first half, as highlighted by their two goals.
Andriy Yarmolenko opened the scoring in the fourth minute off a corner from Shinji Kagawa. It wasn’t that straight forward, however, with the Ukrainian scoring off a clever back heel after the ball fell to his feet.
Augsburg equalized seven minutes later but Dortmund reclaimed the lead when Kagawa hit a wonderful chip in the 23rd minute.
Kagawa’s strike gave him 38 Bundesliga goals, passing Shinji Okazaki as the Bundesliga’s top Japanese goal scorer. But all we’ll remember about the match is the Aubameyang penalty miss.
Oh, and because we’re based in the United States, we’re contractually obligated to mention Christian Pulisic. The American teenager played the full 90 minutes. He did not register a goal or an assist, but he's still our lord and savior.
