Sometimes it feels like fate is inevitable. But then there are times when even as you do the worst you could possibly do, things go your way. This happened in the Club America vs Queretaro penalty shootout in Copa MX.
Copa MX is underestimated by most. However, on occasion it delivers quite entertaining games. Sometimes this entertaining quality is not granted by the quality of the game but rather the opposite. This was the case when Club América hosted Querétaro in the Copa MX quarter finals.
In the first half, “Las Águilas” were playing well and created many chances. They took the lead with an impeccable header by Oribe Peralta in the 13th minute.
Club América continued playing well and created several chances, failing to score every time. Querétaro goal keeper Tiago Volpi denied them in a couple occasions with remarkable saves. The ball even hit the post two times after attempts by Peralta and Darwin Quintero.
With “Los azulcremas” missing countless chances against Querétaro, it certainly felt as if “Las Águilas” would undergo the same fate as Chivas the night before, who were eliminated by Atlante via penalty shootout after losing a 1-0 lead.
This impression was further reinforced when Javier Güemez scored the equalizer for “Gallos” in the 66th minute.
In the 80th minute, the referee called a controversial penalty in favor of Club América after Cecilio Domínguez tripped inside the box.
So América had the chance to secure the victory in the final minutes but Darwin Quintero sent the ball over the crossbar.
The match ended with a 1-1 score and so the teams headed into one of the most bizarre penalty shootouts you’ll ever see. And here is where all hell broke loose. Take a look and see what you think.
There you go. Out of 9 penalties taken by two professional, seven were missed and only two were scored. Querétaro failed to score in four occasions. You have to give credit to América’s goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín for saving to penalties though.
Had you ever seen a team missing all their penalties?
After the weirdest of victories, Club América will face Monterrey in the Copa MX semifinals.
