Canadian Phenom Alphonso Davies Scores His First Goal For Bayern Munich

18-year-old Canadian phenom Alphonso Davies scored his first Bundesliga goal for Bayern Munich on Sunday, coming on as a substitute in the club’s 6-0 hammering of Mainz 05 at the Allianz Arena and completing the scoring.

A James Rodriguez hat-trick alongside goals from Robert Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman had given Bayern a 5-0 lead when Davies came on for David Alaba in the 59th minute.

It was the Canadian’s fifth appearance for the club since transferring from the Vancouver Whitecaps back in January, but he’s totaled only 56 minutes in all those games. Sunday’s 31-minute runout was the longest of his young Bayern career so far, and Davies responded with his first goal only 11 minutes after coming on.

Lewandowski had a great chance at scoring his second of the match in the 70th minute, but his effort was saved and Davies was on-hand to score off the rebound with a composed finish into the roof of the net.

Davies was an unused sub during Bayern’s 1-3 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League, but this goal will keep him in manager Niko Kovac’s plans as the club approaches its final eight league games and a DFB-Pokal quarterfinal against Heidenheim.

Things couldn’t be closer in the Bundesliga with Bayern and Borussia Dortmund level on 60 points after 26 games. However, Bayern sits top on goal difference, an important stat that’s been bettered with this emphatic victory.

Dortmund defeated Hertha Berlin 3-2 on Saturday, but the club needed a 92nd-minute winner from captain Marco Reus to escape the Olympiastadion with three points.
