Dortmund Player Scores Absurd, Whimsical Goal In Training

Borussia Dortmund’s Raphaël Guerreiro made a return to the pitch after four months on Tuesday in the DFB Pokal, coming on in the 63rd minute of a 5-0 rout of FC Magdeberg. But he did something more incredible during training on Wednesday.

Apparently happy to be back and playing after breaking his foot in the Confederations Cup with Portugal in June, Guerreiro scored a whimsical, pirouetting goal with his heel that somehow found the upper 90 during practice.

Who even thinks to try something like that, let alone pull it off? It’s a good thing he scored, because his coaches probably would have had him running laps if he whiffed on the shot and wasted training time after having been injured for so long.

In his first year in Germany, Guerreiro was third on the Dortmund with six league goals last season while adding three assists after having come over from Lorient. The midfielder started Portugal’s first two games of the Confederations Cup in June before suffering his broken foot, which forced him out until the second half of Tuesday’s cup match.

The Dortmund training goal was just the latest good news for the Black and Yellow, which could use some after its Champions League struggles this season. Along with Guerreiro, Andre Schürrle returned from an injury layoff on Tuesday, entering for 18-year-old man of the match Alexander Isak in the 74th minute. Additionally, captain Marcel Schmelzer played in Germany for the first time in about six weeks following an ankle injury, though he did feature in the team’s disappointing 1-1 draw at APOEL in the Champions League last week.

Christian Pulisic was not in the 18 for Dortmund, which gave the day off to a number of starters like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mario Gotze and Lukasz Piszczek.

Dortmund has a big stretch of matches coming up, starting with a trip to sixth-place Hannover this weekend. That’s followed by the return fixture against APOEL in the Champions League and the anticipated visit of Bayern Munich to Signal-Iduna Park on Nov. 4.
