71-Year-Old Super Fan Travels From U.S. To U.K. For Every Home Match

Geoffrey Hewings is now a hero to all sports fans who don’t live close to their favorite teams. The 71-year-old professor traveled thousands of miles from his home in Chicago to watch Cardiff City play every one of their home games, except one, in their first season in the Premiere League.

This season ticket holder spent thousands of dollars on airfares, train tickets and hotels to make sure he didn’t miss out on the action.

“Very few people follow their passions, which is what I’m doing…” said the Cardiff City supporter. “How long I’m able to sustain this I don’t know, but I’m really glad I did this. It has been a truly amazing experience.”

Hewings, who has been a Cardiff City fan since he was six, grew up in Northwest London and would travel to South Wales every summer to visit his grandparents. His father took him to Cardiff games often and his first match at Ninian Park – the former home of Cardiff City – was in 1949.

Despite their superfan’s support, Cardiff City didn’t enjoy much success this season. Hewings was able to enjoy five of the club’s seven wins, but after being promoted to the EPL this season, Cardiff City finished in last place with the worst goal differential in the league at -42. The Bluebirds were relegated and will spend next season in the Championship division.

Could you imagine minor traveling to just half of the Milwaukee Bucks games this season? It only shows Hewings true love and fanship for the team.  Hopefully it isn't another 10 years until their next promotion, but cheers to Geoffrey Hewings for following his dream, even though it was disappointing season.
