PSV Eindhoven stumbled to a 3-3 draw with Vitesse to allow Ajax to go top of the Dutch Eredivisie table on goal difference, but things could’ve been worse if not for the dynamic play of Hirving “Chucky” Lozano.
With PSV trailing 1-0 shortly before halftime, the El Tri star burst through the Vitesse defense, drove into the box and was taken out by the goalkeeper to earn his side a penalty. The 23-year-old then duly converted by sending an effort low and to the keeper’s right.
But in the 59th minute, PSV would go down again after Vitesse’s Martin Odegaard (yes, the former Norwegian phenom who’s on loan from Real Madrid) scored a banger.
Luuk de Jong would equalize for PSV, but then Maikel van der Werff looked to have handed Vitesse all three points following his goal in the 89th minute. As things stood, Ajax was about to go one-point clear at the top, but then Chucky earned and converted his second penalty at the death.
Chucky now has 17 league goals, matching his total from last season.
Only five matches remain in the Eredivisie. PSV’s sternest remaining test comes on the final matchday (May 12), when traveling to fourth place AZ Alkmaar. Ajax’s most difficult contest also falls on the last matchday — against fifth place Utrecht — but the Amsterdam-based side must also balance the demands of a Champions League quarterfinal against Juventus.
