While the saga surrounding Mauro Icardi continues to develop, Inter Milan’s top four aspirations took a wobble Sunday after throwing away a 3-1 lead over Fiorentina with just 16 minutes remaining.
Icardi, who hasn’t played since Feb. 9, was again not involved as his reported knee complaint will sideline him until at least March 7. However, with talks of a contract renewal reportedly gone to hell (Icardi’s agent is his wife, Wanda Nara) and Icardi having been previously stripped of his captaincy and frozen out of the team, the latest reports claim that the Argentine striker may well have played his final match for the Nerazzurri.
Today, Fiorentina took an early lead after an own goal from Stefan de Vrij, but Inter reclaimed the advantage in the first half with goals from Matias Vecino and Matteo Politano. In the 52nd minute, Ivan Perisic’s penalty made it 3-1 to Inter.
But in the 74th minute, Fiorentina’s comeback began thanks to this incredible free kick from Luis Muriel. The Colombian dared to go at Samir Handanović's post with his effort from long-range, and it was a postage stamp finish from the 27-year-old.
Then, with the clock reading 90’+11’ (!!!), Jordan Veretout would score the equalizer from the spot.
Crazy finish: Fiorentina v Inter. Inter up 3-2, referee gives pen in 6th min of time added on. VAR intervenes. He looks at it for (what feels like) hours. Then overrules VAR and sticks with his decision (wrongly IMO) given pen.
Veretout converts pen. It's 3-3.— Gabriele Marcotti (@Marcotti) February 24, 2019
Inter remains third following the draw, but AC Milan is one point back in fourth and Roma two back in fifth.
