"Gio has a muscular problem and can't be with us," Ferretti said during a news conference on Monday. "We are looking into who will be on the squad."
It is not clear when dos Santos picked up his injury.
The winner of the playoff match that dos Santos will miss will qualify for the Confederations Cup in Russia in 2017. Both the US and Mexico highly prize the opportunity to play in the Confederations Cup becuase it is a valuable team building opportunity along the way to the real prize, the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Dos Santos has long been one of Mexico's most promising and talented players, but he has never hit the heights that many fans of El Tri hoped he would. His recent move away from the elite football of Europe to the MLS was criticized by many who think it is a sign that he has given up on his career, or at the very least has given up on challenging hismelf against the world's best.
The 26-year-old has gotten off to a decent start in the MLS. He has scored three goals and added four assists in seven matches with the Galaxy, who have gone 4-1-2 in that time.
