Cuauhtemoc Blanco

When Cuauhtemoc Blanco announced his intention to run for mayor of Cuernavaca, Mexico, following his retirement from soccer, most people didn't quite believe him. Well, he ran, and he won, and now he's the mayor of Cuernavaca, a city of just more than 300,000 located just south of Mexico City.

Blanco, it seems, is not done climbing the political ladder. The former Club America and Chicago Fire star reportedly has his eyes on the governorship of Morelos, the state in which Cuernavaca is located.

There are good players, there are great players, and then there are legends. Cuauhtémoc Blanco is unquestionably the latter. 

Slightly hunch-backed, controversial as can be, with phenomenal field vision and brilliant on the pitch, Blanco is the last legend to play for Club América and he left his mark playing for Chicago Fire in MLS from 2007 to 2009.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco has not had a good April. The Club America and Mexico National Team legend, anc current Mayor of Cuernavaca, Mexico, was named by a man who shot and a prominent Mexican businessman as one of the people who ordered the assassination. Blanco, who so far has no discernable motive for the crime, says he is being framed by the governor of the Morelos state, who he is obviously not on good terms with.

Blanco has talked about running for governor in the future.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco is a legend. El Temo was one of the most creative, entertaining players in the world during his career. Hell, even his post-playing career, featuring a successful election to the mayorship of Cuernavaca, a government investigation and a hunger strike, has been absurd. His signature move, the Cuauteminha, involved him gathering the ball between his feet and hopping away from defenders.

Javier Guemez, who plays for Blanco's former team, Club America, tried to do the Cuauhteminha against Coras Tepic. It did not go as planned.

Former Mexico international Cuauhtemoc Blanco began and ended a hunger strike over the weekend to protest an impeachment process that attempted to unseat him as mayor of Cuernavaca.

The digital editors over at MLS have created an astounding compilation video comprised of each MLS team’s best goal ever. The video includes goals from all 20 current MLS clubs, as well as the best from the now defunct Chivas USA, Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

Entering its 21st season, MLS may not have as large of a selection size as the Premier League or La Liga (especially so for clubs like New York City FC, Orlando City SC and the Montreal Impact) but there are some absolute beauties in this mix.

Chinese political revolutionary Mao Zedong once said “political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.” Obviously he was a man fond of frightening his own people with weapons in order to keep his citizens in line. That’s one way of carrying out your duties as an elected official.

Just days after announcing his victory in the Cuernavaca mayoral race, Cuauhtemoc Blanco is in the hospital.
