The Indian Super League is unique in world football. One of two top flights in India since 2014, the league holds an interesting place in Asian football. With players from around the globe and a good share of domestic talent, the Indian Super League top scorers 2020-2021 list exemplifies why soccer is called the world’s game.
The Indian Super League was founded in 2013 and played its first season a year later. With a regular season and playoffs, it’s closer to American sports than British sports, providing fans with a wonderful blend of the best of both worlds.
The league’s all-time best goal scorers have hailed from around the world, including Spain’s Ferrán Corominas, Nigeria’s Bartholomew Ogbeche, Brazil’s Marcelinho and Fiji’s Roy Krishna. After the 2020-21 season, Corominas remained the all-time leading scorer with 48, one ahead of India’s Sunil Chhetri. Remarkably, the top six on the all-time list features players from six different continents.
Corominas also owns the record for most goals in a single season with 18 in 2017-18.
The Indian Super League top scorers 2020-2021 featured a thrilling Golden Boot race. Goa’s Igor Angulo of Spain and ATK Mohun Bagan’s Krishna both scored 14 goals. Angulo won the Golden Boot but Krishna was named “Hero of the League,” awarded to the ISL’s best player. It was the second straight year Krishna tied for the league lead in goals but did not win the Golden Boot; in 2019-20 he scored 15 goals, as did two other players (Ogbeche and Nerijus Valskis).
Mumbai City, led by English striker Adam le Fondre, won the league title in 2020-21, edging out Krishna’s club in the final on March 13, 2021. Mumbai City also will represent the Indian Super League in the AFC Champions League after winning the League Winners Shield (the regular-season title).
