It takes a certain type of person to pull off a panenka penalty. You either need to be an artist like Andrea Pirlo, possess a samba-style flair like Neymar, or have pure uninhibited confidence and technical prowess like Ross Barkley. Hibernian's Jason Cummings has precisely none of the above, but that didn't stop him from giving it a go against Dundee United in the Scottish Cup semi-final.
Wow. Your team is deadlocked at 0-0. You have a chance to put them ahead and into a cup final...and you go with the panenka? Just because you pulled it off in FIFA 16 doesn't mean you should actually do it.
Luckily for him, his manager wasn't around to see it, per the Telegraph.
“I didn’t see the penalty he missed because I was inside at the toilet,” said Alan Stubbs, the Hibs manager.
“I was hoping to hear a cheer but when I heard the groan I knew what had happened. I can’t knock him because it takes character to take a penalty kick during a semi-final and if he had done that type of penalty consistently, I would say, ‘Fair enough’, but…”
In fairness to Jason Cummings, he did come through later in the game during the penalty shootout that saw Hibernian through to the final.
If only he had done that in the first place.
