Who would’ve thought we’d ever get here?
Some people have speculated that Manchester UNited are ready to offer Rooney compensation to buy out the rest of his £250,000-a-week contract and see him off.
Rooney's deal with United until the deal expires in 2019.
While it is tough to believe they’d let Rooney go for free after such a long and fruitful career with the club; if we were only to analyze his performance this season, the move makes perfect sense.
Here is a guy who spends more time on the bench than on the field and is eating up £250,000 every week. That is a hefty bill, which Jose Mourinho could use to strengthen his squad for the upcoming 2017-18 season.
Whether Rooney manages to jump the red ship for free or not, rumors are already linking the England international with a return to his boyhood club, Everton.
Everton’s manager Ronald Koeman lost no time commenting on the story, saying that Rooney would be more than welcome should he decide to return to his old home.
"He still has two or three years in front of him to play at the highest level.
"What will happen at the end of the season, I do not know? In my opinion, he's one of the players who can make Everton stronger than they are now," Koeman told Sky Sports.
"I still think Wayne Rooney is playing at a high level and he made a good choice staying at Manchester United and in the Premier League.
"It's all about what the player likes, what Manchester United need to do and we are not involved in that project. Every player who we feel can make the team stronger is welcome at Everton."
So far this season, Rooney has played 18 Premier League games, starting only half of them.
The club legend scored twice and dished out five assists, which would be decent numbers for regular players, but we are talking about a guy who was seldom constrained within single digits during his career when the subject was scoring goals.
For Manchester United, an outside factor also seems to be playing an important role amid this whole situation.
They are confident that United will win the Antoine Griezmann lottery this summer. And, no matter how rich you are, having £250,000 per week to spend would sure help make the Frenchman an alluring offer.
