America’s Presence In Europe Won’t Stop Growing — 20-Year-Old Cole Bassett Heads Overseas

The number of USMNT winter transfers to Europe continues to grow by the day. With Major League Soccer not beginning until Feb. 26, some of the brighter stars are skipping out on next season with their respective MLS clubs and looking for minutes in Europe.

One of the latest Americans to head overseas is Colorado Rapids homegrown midfielder Cole Bassett. After helping the Rapids finish first in the Western Conference with five goals and three assists on the season, the player from Littleton, Colorado, (where the author of this story is from, coincidentally) is taking his talents on loan to Dutch side Feyenoord.

The loan deal lasts for 18 months, meaning Bassett will play the remainder of Feyenoord’s 2021-22 season and all the 2022-23 season. The Dutch club will have the option to buy him permanently by the end of the loan.

The Colorado youngster got his first cap for the USMNT in December and scored the game-winning goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

All that’s left for Bassett to do will be to break into Feyenoord’s starting squad. The famous Dutch club is in a tight battle for the Eredivisie title with Ajax and PSV.

Bassett won’t be the only American in the Dutch league as he will also have Richard Ledezma on PSV and Luca de la Torre on Heracles.

Feyenoord is getting a good one.
