Tigers kick-started their 2016 Liga MX Apertura campaign with a fantastic 3-0 victory over Club America at the Azteca Stadium. Javier Aquino scored an unbelievable goal in the 38th minute, Andre-Pierre Gignac added another with a sublime chip in the 59th and Ismael Sosa delivered the final nail in the coffin in the final moments of the match.
With America entering the match undefeated and Tigres having to settle for two opening draws, the visitors closed the gap between the sides to a single point.
Aquino’s 38th minute opener was certainly the goal of the match. While it’s up for debate as to whether the Mexican international intended to shoot or cross, his effort still blazed into the top-right corner from a ridiculous angle.
Gignac, who’s been unplayable since joining the Monterrey-based club, added to Tigres’ lead with a delicate chip in the 59th minute. It was a goal befitting a France international.
Argentine forward Ismael Sosa completed the scoring by rounding the keeper in the game’s final moments to secure three points for Tigres.
Club America were always against it having seen Alex Ibarra earn a red card in first half stoppage time. Still, losing to their rival for the third consecutive match, and at home, will anger America supporters.
Tigres return to action on August 6th against Chiapas. Club America play on August 5th against Veracruz.
