The USMNT has another weapon in the making. Joe Scally is only 18 years old and has become a consistent and valuable starter for Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach. On Saturday Scally opened his Bundesliga scoring account against Wolfsburg in stoppage time to secure a 3-1 victory.

I volunteer to give Joe Scally my airline miles so he could fly over and crash the USMNT camp? pic.twitter.com/SZP3YW0AfG

Scally becomes one of the youngest Americans to score in the Bundesliga. Christian Pulisic and Gio Reyna netted their first goals in the German top flight when they were 17.
Scally burst on the scene for Gladbach this season and has firmly established himself in the squad’s starting eleven. He made the move to Germany from New York City FC in Jan. 2021. After spending several months playing for Gladbach’s second team last season, he’s now gone the full 90 minutes in all seven Bundesliga games of the 2021/22 season.
The American teen is a versatile player who has played as a right back, left back and right midfielder for Gladbach this season. His primary position is as a right back but it’s likely that USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter would want him on the left side. The USMNT has serious overflow issues at the right back position.
USMNT Right Backs
- Segiño Dest (Barcelona)
- DeAndre Yedlin (Galatasaray)
- Reggie Cannon (Boavista FC)
- Joe Scally (Borussia Monchengladbach)
- Shaq Moore (CD Tenerife)
- Bryan Reynolds (AS Roma)
Meanwhile the left back position for the USMNT is literally just Antonee Robinson. Sam Vines and George Bello have made some appearances at the position under Berhalter, but the depth is not there.
It would be shocking to not see Scally in the USMNT roster for the World Cup qualifiers in November.
