You might want to sit down, Liverpool fans, this is a real heart-stopper. The biggest Liverpool stars past and, possibly, present are about to play the charity match of your dreams. You will be amazed. You will be shocked. Some of you just might be slightly aroused, and we say that because that is a perfectly normal reaction considering the kind of star power that will be gracing the pitch on March 29th.
Luis Suarez, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres, Jamie Carragher, Dirk Kuyt, Pepe Reina, and of course Steven Gerrard. And as if that start-studded lineup needed any improvement, the organizers have secured the services of Theirry Henry, Didier Drogba, and John Terry. Now that’s putting the cherry on top.
There will also be current Liverpool first team players partaking in the match, but who participates will be thoroughly restricted by international duty, as the charity match will be taking place during an international break. That means Mario Balotelli, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson, and a slew of other players if Liverpool keeps up its current form, will all likely not be present.
Putting that aside, and ignoring the average age of the stars we have already listed, this match should be a blast to watch. A friendly such as this never gets that competitive, but no one watches a charity match to be inspired by competitive fire. We are going to see old friends, old legends combine on the field for the first time in years.
Everyone is going to be having a good time. Unlike the rest of us, when legends go out a kick the ball around, it’s a spectacle worthy of our admiration.
Gerrard and Carragher will pick teams out of the pool of available players, so we don’t know which players will be on which teams, but we see no reason why we shouldn’t indulge our imaginations a little. Just the possibility of Gerrard putting Torres through onto with a perfectly placed long ball is mouth waveringly nostalgic. Don’t get us started on the possibility of Carragher and Terry on the same back four. That’s is just too weird to comprehend.
Before we lose ourselves in fantasy, we’ll end with this: Suarez will record hat trick of goals AND assists. You heard it here first.
