The Germany vs. Netherlands friendly that was supposed to take place today has been cancelled, and the stadium evacuated, because officials reportedly discovered a "concrete plan" to detonate a bomb inside the stadium, The Guardian reported.
“We have received concrete information that someone was planning to set off explosives inside the stadium,” Hannover police chief Volker Kluwe told German news agency DPA.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was scheduled to attend the game, as well as several cabinet ministers.
Although it has not been confirmed, a German newspaper reported that police had found explosives in a truck disguised as an ambulance near the stadium.
Police briefly let fans in before the game, before quickly ushering them back outside.
"Protecting lives was the only choice," said German interior minister Thomas de Maizière in a press conference.
