For the first time in the club’s 119-year history, FC Barcelona is adopting a checkerboard print on the home kit. Is it in homage to Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitić and the famous jerseys of his national team? No.
According to Barcelona’s official statement, the checkerboard design “takes its inspiration from the city of Barcelona by incorporating the characteristic blocks of its Eixample district, home to some of the most emblematic buildings designed by the great architect Antoni Gaudí.”
The jersey also features the Catalan flag on the front of the shirt at the neck. The kits will go on sale June 4.

“The kit is something new and exciting,” said Gerard Piqué. “It might be different but it is 100 percent Barca and it is even better that the design represents the bond the club has with the supporters and the people who are driving the city forward.”

Also, for the first time ever, the Barça women’s team jersey will go on sale to the general public. The main difference here is the sponsor: the women’s team features Stanley across the chest.
