The Canadian Premier League has gone viral and perhaps entered the history books with the greatest miss of all time.
In a match between Valour FC and HFX Wanderers at IG Field in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Valour went on the attack in the 18th minute and looked to have the opening goal after Alessandro Riggi forced the ball under goalkeeper Christian Oxner.
The rolling sphere was millimeters away from fully crossing the goal-line — Oxner had no chance of reaching it — when Valour attacker William Akio arrived on the scene. He reached to provide the final touch, but instead of easing it over the line Akio somehow managed to curl a spectacular miss all the way out for a Wanderers throw-in.
WHAT DID WE JUST WITNESS!?
One of the most bizarre sequences in soccer history, as this player celebrates a "goal" too early and kicks the ball into the sky BEFORE it fully crosses the line #FIFA22 | #FUT | #soccer pic.twitter.com/JdTrfaE0ss— OneSoccer (@onesoccer) July 10, 2022
I think this tweet from OneSoccer is being very kind about Akio 'celebrating the goal too early.' Based on the replay, it definitely looks like he's trying to finish the chance.
Thankfully for Akio, Valour found a game-winner in the 84th-minute through New Zealand international Moses Dyer.
