Borussia Dortmund suffered a shock defeat to Bundesliga newcomers Union Berlin on Saturday. Dortmund lined up with Julian Brandt, Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho and Paco Alcacer leading the attack; on paper, this match should be won by Dortmund every time.
But a win for Dortmund was not in the cards. Union struck first via Marius Bulter’s low strike. Alcacer equalized for Dortmund three minutes later to breathe some life back into the match.
The second half would be more of the same for Union Berlin. Die Eisernen would take the lead again through Bulter, and the home fans were in dreamland. On 75 minutes, Sebastian Andersson drove the nail through Dortmund’s coffin and brought Union out of the early relegation zone and up into 10th place. Union thoroughly outplayed Dortmund and deserved the three points.

Dortmund did very well in the Bundesliga last season, coming close to winning the title until succumbing to Bayern Munich. Yesterday's match comes as a reality check to Dortmund: slip-ups in the title race cannot happen like they did last season. For a second week running, Dortmund was unconvincing and lacked quality in a few areas.

Dortmund drops down to fifth place. Bayern Munich moved up to second after beating Mainz 6-1, and RB Leipzig is still firmly at the top of the table.
